Have you ever wanted to start your own radio station? HOXTON FM is six years old, and to celebrate founder and chief Dan Formless shares with us his top tips for radio broadcasting today.
Live is king. “When Hoxton FM started we were doing pre-recorded podcasts for the first few months so we could develop our style and keep an eye on the quality of sound. Although as soon as you start editing stuff you realise how great live is! Seriously though, ‘live’ makes a huge difference. There’s something incredibly endearing about your listeners and viewers going along for the ride.”
Community is key. “The key thing [with setting up a radio station] is the people.” A strong programme of interns who’ve been trained up by Hoxton FM coupled with the station’s focus on technical innovation means they’ve trained up a new generation of young radio broadcasters for the digital age.

Engage in your local creative scene. Hoxton FM broadcasts from local cafes, bars, record shops, venues and parties.
We’re always encouraging collaboration with each other on new projects including music making, events and collective bargaining with suppliers. We stand for unity and synergy with the vibrant creative communities that surround us.

Sound quality is key. At Hoxton FM we have always kept a high priority for sound quality. Hoxton FM prioritises high quality, diversity and innovation in every element of our live radio broadcasts.
Musical freedom breeds diversity and creativity. That’s why we have never hindered our radio presenters in their musical expression on their shows. This allows each presenter to develop their own unique sound and audience.
And finally:
It’s all about Forward Movement. If your vision isn’t possible now due to budget or technology constraints don’t be deterred. Work steadily towards your goals and do what is possible now. Technology is moving so fast and much of it is accessible, we weren’t able to broadcast video when we first started but it has since been made possible due to technological progressions and platforms such as Chew TV and Facebook introducing it’s Live feature. Video has since vastly extended the audience reach for Hoxton FM. It’s exciting to think where technology will take us in the future!
