Paris is better than Berlin. Also, there’s too many techno artists doing the same thing right now.
That’s according to Laurent Garnier, one of the greatest dance music legends of the last decade when he in a frank new interview about his views on the Techno and House scene these days.
The French DJ and producer celebrated 30 years in the business, having been spinning records since the early days and starting his career right here in Manchester, DJing at The Hacienda in 1987. “The Hacienda was golden and glowing and I saw the explosion of it, and I came before that,” says Garnier, who moved to the city from London at 19 years old thinking he would “die” if there was no nightlife. “Then the story happened, house music arrived.”
Now a seasoned master he feels that up and coming artists are paying homage rather than innovating telling Billboard “The super-trendy techno [artists] now, they’re all Jeff Mills’ sons. It’s cool, I love it, I love his music – sometimes Jeff does it better – but there are 600 of them.”
To sum up then, Laurent’s advice to budding Techno producers and artists of all kind? “I think our task is to surprise people, make them go crazy, but once they’re there, take them somewhere else.”
